Go the Distance Sports Camp, for ages 6 – 12, will be held June 15, 16 and 17 from 1 - 4:00 PM at the Cedar Lake Town Complex, 7408 Constitution Ave. in Cedar Lake. No entry fee is necessary, however, a parent/guardian signed registration form is required. Registration begins daily at 12:30 PM. Sports Camp is sponsored by Gateway Homeschool Network and Gateway Christian Fellowship of Cedar Lake.

At Go the Distance Sports Camp, kids will enjoy a variety of sports including soccer, basketball, volleyball, cup stacking and more. It doesn't matter if they've played all their lives or just started yesterday. Go the Distance Sports Camp helps kids improve their skills. Drills and activities will get kids focused on the fundamentals that make athletes great. In addition, the sports camp creates a positive and encouraging environment that builds their confidence and self-esteem. Between sports sessions, coaches lead in songs, tell stories, and do cool object lessons that help character-building themes like teamwork, endurance, and sacrifice, take hold in kid's hearts. "We want to give kids the chance to learn more about sports, discover character-building concepts, and have a whole lot of fun!"

We will be accepting class reservations for next years high school classes.

This year Gateway will offer:

Tier 1: field trips and special events for all ages
Tier 2: Enrichment classes for grades 1-8 scheduled throughout the year.
Tier 3: Co-op classes for high school and junior high on Tuesdays (classes dependent on parent volunteers.)
Tier 4: Pilot program offering virtual classes for grades 7-12 using our teachers from the co-op and virtual school curriculum, combined with small group sessions meeting throughout the semester (not all will meet weekly).

The virtual classes will be available to view in the afternoon on Saturday.

We are honored to have Pastor Ed Bontreger lead a 2 part series on Parenting. Pastor Bontreger has been a pastor since 1974. He has been in Christian counseling ministry since 1983 and in 1985 received a Certification as a Human Resources Consultant. In 1985 he led a successful church plant. He is currently the pastor at Fellowship of Living Hope a non-denominational church in Renssalaer, Indiana. He is the father of 2 and grandfather of 8. He and his wife, Ruthann, have foster-parented over 50 children and have provided care for adults in transition.

There will be a mom's meeting on Tuesday, September 14 at 7:00 PM. We will be meeting to plan this years enrichment program for grades 3 - 6 with a class for younger siblings ages 5 through grade 2. If you have any ideas of what classes to offer now is your chance to sent them in. We are in need of at least 3 moms to lead a 6 week class and others to help out. Please pray and see if you can fill this need. We are also looking for field trip ideas. Please email any ideas this week and join us next Tuesday.

Hello all,

English Classes: The required textbooks are $29 plus shipping. If we order together we can save significantly on the shipping cost. Mom's Night, Tuesday, August 3, 7-9 pm. We heard a number of moms complaining about the difficulty in helping or motivating their students to be successful in their school work. We will be discussing some ways to help your homeschooled student accomplish their educational goals this school year. Please come and share your ideas over a cup of coffee and with a dose of friendship and encouragement.

Fund Raisers: Alicia Sluis has arranged for our group to participate in the "Box Tops for Education" program. Please save all you "Box Tops" and bring them in. We have a container to deposit them in. We also have a box to collect used cell phones and used INK CARTRIDGES that we will get money for when we send the full box in. We do fundraisers to help offset school expenses and keep costs as low as possible.

ORIENTATION: August 17. Please choose one of the sessions to attend. Dads are welcome too. We will have a session at 1-3 in the afternoon and 7-9 in the evening. Please let us know which one you will attend so we will be properly prepared. The purpose of this meeting is to go over school policies and expectations as well as to meet-and-greet. (Thank you to those who have already responded.) This is for the Junior/Senior High classes. (Ennrichment yet to be determined.)

Teachers: We will have a short meeting at noon on August 17.

Please let us know if you have not received the required book list or if you have any questions about that list. You are required to purchase the books on your own in time for classes. (See note above concerning English books.)

Thank you everyone for a great year!

Tupperware sales - please turn in money by the 20th!

If you have not paid for May please so so. We still have utility bills, internet costs and expenses for the end of year parties to pay. We distribute the costs over the 9 months to help the families, but we need to close this years books.

High School finishes up the 18th of May and students have until May 30th to turn in any assignments that are missing that they would like some credit for.

Next Tuesday, May 18- pot luck lunch 12:00 pm Bring food to share!

Thursday the 20th is cleaning day at Gateway. Time to clean and pack up and bring closure to the year. 1-3 pm

Field trip to the Merriville Pierce Middle School Planetarium is Monday May 24th. $2.00 a person, adults or K-12 students. Must be there by 9:30 am. There are still slots available, please email if you want to attend by Monday May 17th. After that, the remaining slots will be offered to the homeschool community outside of Gateway.

If you have not indicated that your jr/high or high school student will be with us again next year, please do so soon. At the end of the month we will announce if there are any openings and we will not be able to guarantee a spot if it is not reserved.

SUMMER

If you are interested in math or English tutoring this summer please let us know so we can put together some time slots. Individual cost is $10 per hour. Group sessions are less determined on the number of students enrolled. Normally $5 a session, which may be longer than an hour.

Piano, brass and woodwind lessons available at $10 per lesson - taught by Judy Gardner.

Based off of "Speech Boot Camp" by Institute for Excellence in Writing. Students will be required to prepare speeches at home each night to present the next day. Includes impromptu, introductory, narrative, descriptive, and persuasive... plus more.
(Note: Speech will also be offered as a semester class at the co-op next year if your student is unable to complete the week long intensive class.)

Jr. High Writing Mini Camp (grades 6-8)
June 7-9 from 1 - 3:30 pm

Take away the fear of writing and give you students valuable keys for success! This middle school level course provides an introduction to Writing using structure and style developed by Institute for Excellence in Writing. Students will be required to complete a writing assignment on Monday and Tuesday nights to be used in class the next day.
(Great introduction to the Excellence in Writing program that we will use for the junior high at co-op next year.)

When we did this last year, everyone enjoyed the opportunity to get to know each other a little better, building friendships. First of all, this is important information to anyone planning on joining us this coming school year. I hope you will take a few minutes to read through and let me know if you have any questions concerning any of this information.

Registration and Parents Meeting: August 11, 2009 At Gateway Fellowship, 10728 W. 133rd Ave., Cedar Lake, IN This is very important!! We are asking that everyone come to registration on August 11. It is very important that registration fees be paid by August 11 in order for us to order all teacher books and supplies in time for classes. This will also be the time when any missing paperwork is completed. Please let us know as soon as possible if you will not be able to be at this registration.

We do not want to turn anyone away due to finances. Individual plans may be arranged if you are in financial need.

Parent's Meeting: The purpose of this meeting is to let everyone know in advance what the guidelines will be for co-op classes. Teachers will have an opportunity to explain their classes and parents will have an opportunity to ask questions about classes. Please remember that everyone is a volunteer and everyone's time is precious. Please make an effort to be at this meeting.

Books: You can go to the blogsite: http://gatewayhomeschoolnetwork.blogspot.com to get the book requirements for highschool classes. You should go ahead and order them so your student has them by class time, August 25. Be sure to use the correct ISBN to ensure the proper book. We will be placing a group order for the Drama books (this is for the students wanting highschool credit class). You can place your order at registration for these. If you have any questions about the books, please contact us as soon as possible.

Donations Needed: In order to keep our costs low, we need everyone to contribute some of the consumable supplies; so we have come up with a list of needs for our classes. Thank you in advance for your help with these items.

All Enrichment Class Families: We are having an art supply drive at registration. The pack should include: scissors, glue, crayons, washable markers, ruler, pencils and anything else you would like to throw in. If each family contributes one pack, we will be off to a good start.

ALSO Donations needed: The following items are needed throughout the year. Would you please consider putting these things on your shopping list and bringing them in when you can: Toilet Paper, Paper Towels, Paper Cups, Construction Paper, Copy Paper. We will be sending out an additional list with some science supplies we would like to borrow if anyone has those items.

Enrichment Teachers: We are still in need of a couple of parents to help in the enrichment area. Specifically, we need a parent who will be willing to lead 3-4th grade students during gym time for the first 6 weeks. This is informal instruction; we need an adult that will be a leader. We will provide game ideas.

We need parents to lead/teach students in six week sections on any topic of interest to them. These "class" times are approximately 40 minutes and would be for students from 3rd-7th grade. We currently have someone interested in teaching Latin, Creative Writing and Art. Do you have a special area of interest you would consider sharing? Ideas: logic, P.E., certain period of history, specific science topic, etc. Let us know. Because our group is growing, we need everyone to take part.

We also have a need for a P.E. teacher for highschool second semester. If you are interested or know of someone who would be interested, please let us know.

SERVANT HEARTS NEEDED: At registration, we will have a sign-up sheet listing opportunities for service. Please consider where you can serve. Some of the openings are: yearbook, sign-in/registration person, Care Contact, Phone Tree Organizer, Highschool paper grader, Mom's Night organizer, student newsletter, blog contributor, facility maintenance organizer etc.

SAT Essay Seminar

Need some last minute tips for the June 6 SAT? How about a jump-start for next year? Gateway Christian Fellowship will present a SAT writing seminar on Saturday, May 30th from 8:45 amto 4:00 pm. Students will view the High School Essay Intensive video seminar, produced by the Institute for Excellence in Writing, and practice writing. In this series, Andrew Pudewa creatively teaches students how to practice and prepare for the SAT essay, how to organize and present ideas with style, and presents powerful tips to improve writing flow. Gateway Homeschool Network is seeking families for the 2009-2010 school year. We offer a co-op style learning center where parents share in the learning process. Your children/youth get a chance to learn in a group setting one day a week, with opportunities to meet and socialize. They also receive the benefit of the wealth of knowledge coming from shared teaching responsibilities as well as accountability. The co-op also provides the forum for Homeschool families get to know one another and offer support to each other. The costs for the program are kept as low as possible with consideration for families with multiple children.

Scrapbooking

The last enrichment session for grades 3-8 begins next Thursday, April 16 and ends on Thursday, May 14. This session will include: art, life science (human anatomy-cells, bones etc.), and Spanish. Six week enrichment session begins Thursday, February 26th. Classes will be: hands-on-science, art, and Spanish. Students will be split into three skill-based groups and rotate through the classes. These groupings are especially necessary for Spanish. Group one is for non-readers, or those needing reading/writing assistance - suggested grades 1st-3rd. Group two suggested grades advanced 3rd to 6th. Group three suggested grades advanced 6th grade to 8th grade- this Spanish class will move at a much quicker pace. Please make sure your children bring a folder and pencil. Web sites will be posted for additional Spanish practice throughout the week is you wish you use them. See you Thursday.

Gateway's Physic's Class invites you, grades 1-12 and your parents, to participate in an Egg Drop Contest. Design a container that will protect an egg dropped from at least 12-16 ft. Container cannot contain any liquid or sharp objects, no other restrictions. It must be able to be opened to check egg, uncooked and unaltered. (Must supply own egg.) Drop is scheduled for 3:00 on Thursday, March 5th. (Rain or snow - date March 12th) Prizes for the smallest, lightest, and most creative containers that succeed. Drop an email or sign up at co-op to let us know you will be participating.

What: We are offering you the space and time to scrapbook your photos. If you are already a scrapbooker, bring your stuff and enjoy the time set aside to work. If you have not scrapbooked before, bring your photos, scissors and $5 for consumable supplies that we will provide. We will help you get started. This is a great chance to begin a school scrapbook showing activities that you have done in your school time or perhaps you want to design some pages from your Christmas celebrations.

Costs of program

It is our desire to keep the costs as affordable as possible for families.

For grades 8 - 12, registration is $10 each class. Science has a $50 lab fee.
We are asking each FAMILY to donate $20 a month which goes toward utilities, and general supplies.

All books are the responsibility of the parents.

Band registration is $10 (Monthly donation of $10 per family if this is the only class taken otherwise it is included in the program.)

Enrichment classes
No registration fee. We are asking each FAMILY to donate $10 a month or $2.50 a week to help cover general cost of running the program.

Optional text books and some supplies will be the responsibility of the parents.

NOTE: Since this is a co-op, we need parents to volunteer to co-teach a class, sub occasionally, or help with set up, tear down at the end of the day, clean up, or assist in study hall occasionally.

Co-Op Classes

If you are feeling unsure about teaching a particular high school course because of the amount of preparation needed for daily teaching, you may want to join a co-op or form a new one.

As the name implies, co-ops involve cooperative teaching where two or more parents join together to teach a course. For example, four homeschooling moms might collaborate on a high school history course. Each mom would be responsible for preparing lesson plans, planning field trips, and leading discussions for a quarter. Your investment of preparation and instruction for one quarter would pay off in your child receiving instruction for the whole school year.

Alternatively, instead of dividing up teaching responsibilities in terms of quarters, each mom could focus on a particular time frame. For an American History course, a different mom might teach each of the following sections: the Revolutionary War through the Civil War; Reconstruction through World War I; World War II through Vietnam; and the 1970’s through the present. Yet another co-op option is to team up with one or two other moms and have each mom teach one subject that she feels comfortable teaching to everyone else’s children. You’ll cut down on the number of individual courses that you are preparing for, and your child will be taught by a mom who has had plenty of time to plan and research that subject.

Co-ops also provide networking time for moms. It’s fun to coordinate and plan out the year together. Just make sure at the outset that everyone is on board and has agreed on the responsibilities of each mom and students so that the group functions smoothly.

Finally, should you decide to end each quarter or semester with your student presenting a paper or other type of learning summary, co-ops provide ready-made audiences!
